NEE Beginning Teacher Support

Screengrab of EdHub Beginning Teacher Assistance modules

Many school districts and their beginning teachers struggle to find enough time, money, and substitute teachers to allow attendance at face-to-face beginning teacher assistance sessions. NEE created a module that addresses all of the instructional practices required for beginning teachers in Missouri, where NEE was developed. Teachers and administrators from other states will find that the components address many of the instructional skills and strategies that can be difficult for beginning teachers.

The activities provide an introduction and suggestions for improving skills with the following NEE indicators:

  • NEE Indicator 1.2: Cognitive engagement
  • NEE Indicator 5.1: Affective motivation
  • NEE Indicator 5.2: Managing time, space, and transitions
  • NEE Indicator 6.1: Communication
  • NEE Indicator 7.4: Formative assessment
  • NEE Indicator 8.3: Professional rights and responsibilities

An additional activity, designed for the building administrator, outlines the best practices for using the NEE Beginning Teacher Support module with teachers. School administrators may submit their teachers’ names to verify completion of the activities and to receive a certificate to show the teacher met their Missouri beginning professional development requirements.

Building Instructional Skills

Principals often ask how they can assign EdHub modules to their teachers based on classroom observation scores. The modules in the Building Instructional Skills topic are designed just for that purpose. These materials directly support teacher understanding and effective use of the instructional practices associated with the 10 most-used NEE indicators. After completing the Building Instructional Skills module, the teacher can turn to other EdHub materials on the same topic to expand their knowledge and skills. Dyslexia and Learning Training

Many states, including Missouri, have mandated teacher training on the topic of dyslexia. The EdHub module on dyslexia was created to meet the Missouri requirements, but it will meet the requirements of other states as well. Teachers review the research-based best practices for supporting the literacy skills of their students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities. The module asks the teacher to consider the recommended best practices, analyze their current classroom practices, and create a plan for addressing the potential reading problems their students may exhibit.

Just like NEE’s Beginning Teacher Support module, the dyslexia module gives educators a way to meet their annual training requirement without leaving the building or paying for additional training.

NEE reviews the dyslexia materials each year to add new findings from researchers, update recommendations as needed and add any new and compelling resources that are available.

PD Quick Sessions

The PD Quick sessions are a collection of 15 (and counting) activities that can be used by an administrator with their teachers in a face-to-face PD session. Each activity provides food for thought, a processing strategy, and a reflection piece. Many conclude with a challenge for teachers to try a strategy in their classrooms and report back at the next faculty meeting or other event. These short activities would be an effective way to begin a faculty meeting or work session. Give one of the PD Quick activities a try at your next faculty meeting!

Videos

There are two sets of classroom observation videos available in EdHub:

  • Indicator Scoring Practice Videos were designed for administrators to use in calibrating their scoring. Each video provides a master score and an explanation of how the score was assigned.
  • Indicator Video Exemplars were designed to show what an evaluator is looking for as evidence of highly effective teaching for several of the NEE indicators. These videos do not provide a score but state why the teaching is considered effective.

Both sets of videos may be used with administrators and teachers to develop a shared understanding of the NEE indicators and look-fors.

Introduction to NEE

Schools undergo changes in their faculty makeup each year. It can be difficult to find the time to bring new teachers on board and up-to-speed with the NEE practices and indicators. Introduction to NEE explains the origins of NEE and describes the components of the NEE system.

Building administrators can use the activities as a presentation with their new teachers or allow each teacher to work through the activities on their own and follow up with a question-and-answer session.

Training Materials

EdHub offers modules and activities designed to provide individual training on the NEE components. Activities address how the specific component contributes to the NEE system, how to use it, and how related reports work. These materials are intended to be used by administrators who plan to introduce components such as the NEE Student Survey, teacher professional development plan, unit of instruction plan, student surveys, specialist evaluations, and principal evaluations.

These EdHub modules are all designed to support educators’ growth, and some even help you save time and money while meeting state requirements. To learn more about navigating EdHub, read Getting Started with Professional Learning in EdHub. Happy exploring!
